A Twentieth-century Dream
I got into bed
and closed my eyes
and the warm, black
nothingness of sleep
came
and picked up my soul
hand held it tightly
for a time
that could have beem
forever
of a few moments.
Then I dreamt
I lived in a valley
that was green and peaceful.
I lived on a farm
and had a wife
and three children.
One day three bombers came.
They came low
over the mountains.
When the bombers
were through
the valley
was
gone.
